Common APK Installation Errors
Description
An APK can fail to install for several different reasons. The message on your screen is the best starting point. Note its exact wording before retrying, and avoid downloading random replacement files or switching off security checks just to make the warning disappear.

Match the Error Before Choosing a Fix
Use this page as an installation-error index. Match the wording on your phone, then open the focused guide. A download failure, installer permission request and harmful-app warning need different checks.
| Message or symptom | Start with this guide |
|---|---|
| Download failed or file is incomplete | Download failure checks |
| App not installed | App not installed diagnosis |
| Package appears invalid | Invalid APK package checks |
| Release is not compatible with this phone | Android compatibility checks |
| An update reports a signing conflict | APK signature mismatch checks |
| This source cannot install unknown apps | Installer permission steps |
| Play Protect warns about a harmful app | Play Protect warning guidance |
Download failed or package appears invalid
For a detailed walkthrough, read APK Package Appears Invalid? 7 Safe Fixes. Confirm the official source and file format before retrying.
An interrupted download can leave you with an incomplete package. Compare the downloaded file size with the publisher’s information when available. Use a stable connection, clear space in the download location and retry from the verified source. If the publisher provides a SHA-256 checksum, compare it with the file after the download. Our APK download troubleshooting guide covers the earlier stage.
App not installed
This message can reflect low storage, a damaged package, an unsupported Android version, a conflict with an existing installation or a signing mismatch. Check storage and compatibility first. If you already have the app installed, do not remove it without considering its locally stored data. Android may reject an update signed by a different publisher.
Parsing or incompatible package
The package may require a newer Android version, target a different device architecture or use a format that needs a different installation method. Check the official release requirements. An AAB is not usually a standalone package you tap to install, and an XAPK may include extra files. See our Android package formats guide.
Installation blocked by settings
If Android asks for permission to install from a browser or file manager, first confirm the publisher and file. Then allow only that source if you have decided to proceed. Revoke the source permission afterward if you no longer need it. Our installation pillar explains the steps.
Security warning about the app
A harmful-app warning should be treated differently from a routine source permission prompt. Do not bypass it just to finish an install. Recheck the official publisher and download source, remove the suspicious file, and consider the Play Store or developer’s direct support channel.
A practical fix order
Check the precise message. Verify the publisher and download source. Confirm device and Android compatibility. Check free storage and file integrity. Review conflicts with any installed version. Then use the appropriate fix from our App Not Installed guide. For a step-by-step checklist, see 12 easy fixes for APK installation failed on Android. If the situation still looks suspicious, stop.

FAQ
Should I uninstall an existing app to fix a signature error? Only after confirming the new publisher and backing up data; removal can delete local information.
Will clearing cache solve every error? No. Compatibility, signing and source problems need their own checks.
