Media Hygiene Pro: WordPress Media Scanning and Cleanup

Media Hygiene Pro scans WordPress media and supported website sources for references to images, documents, audio, and video. Its dashboard lists documents with no reference found in the sources it reads, along with details such as their names, URLs, sizes, and types. The scan can also inspect page source to help find media displayed through builders, add-ons, or themes.

Review media with no detected reference

Media Hygiene Pro scans WordPress media and supported website sources for references to images, documents, audio, and video. Its dashboard lists documents with no reference found in the sources it reads, along with details such as their names, URLs, sizes, and types. The scan can also inspect page source to help find media displayed through builders, add-ons, or themes.

An unused result describes what the scan found, not every possible use of a file. Custom code, shortcodes, and dynamic tags may make references when a page loads that the scan cannot see. The dashboard reports detected coverage gaps, including the source and count. Review uncertain files and keep a current backup before deleting; files are removed only after you select them and confirm.

Pro coverage across builders and plugin data

The free version checks supported builders on pages and posts. Pro extends those checks to saved templates, theme options, headers, footers, and custom post types. Supported builders and themes include Gutenberg, Elementor, Divi, Bricks, Visual Composer, OceanWP, and LayerSlider. Pro also includes WP Bakery Page Builder, Beaver Builder, Avada, and Flatsome.

Pro reads media stored in supported plugin fields and data, including Advanced Custom Fields picture, gallery, file, and repeater fields; WooCommerce product galleries, category images, downloadable files, and custom tabs; Pods; Custom Field Suite; Jet Engine; Yoast SEO; All in One SEO; SEO Press; Slider Revolution; Meta Slider; and Smart Slider. Its matching can connect resized, scaled, rotated, and edited copies to an original file, follow references in JSON and serialized data, and work with a moved uploads folder.

Inspect, protect, and manage files

Filter results by file name, year, month, or category, and review the file type and occupied space. The scanner recognizes common media formats, including PDF, JPG and JPEG, PNG, GIF, MP4, MP3, CSV, ZIP, RAR, and TXT. Add files to the whitelist to keep them out of future scans, including files linked from other sites.

  • Download files individually, by page, or use One Shot Download for the full list.
  • Move files to Quarantine first when you want the option to restore them.
  • Use One Shot Delete to remove the full list after reviewing it.
  • Run Folder Scan to find uploads with no database record.
  • Use WP-CLI commands to scan large libraries without relying on browser timeouts.

Pro includes direct support from the plugin. Scans are started by you; scheduled scans are not included.

When a media review helps

Reviewing unused files can help before a hosting migration, after a redesign or rebrand, when discontinued products leave media behind, or when storage limits become a concern. It can also help identify files left by old themes, contributors, or guest posts. Check the results and protect files you still need before removing anything.
