Featured Image from URL Pro: Remote Media, Less Storage

Featured Image from URL Pro extends Featured Image from URL (FIFU) for WordPress websites that use media hosted outside the WordPress Media Library. FIFU Free supports remote featured images for posts, pages and custom post types, as well as main WooCommerce product and product category images. Pro includes featured video and audio, sliders, remote galleries, variation media, and additional automation and integrations. Remote originals can stay at their source, and Pro can download supported images to the Media Library when local copies are needed.

Use remote media in posts and products

Assign supported images and videos to posts, pages, custom post types, WooCommerce products, categories and other supported taxonomy terms. For best results, use a direct media URL that is publicly accessible and enables external show. Loading speed depends on the image host, file size, caching and CDN options.

Featured video, audio and sliders

Use supported video services such as YouTube and Vimeo, along with local Media Library videos and remote video files. Featured audio supports services such as Spotify and SoundCloud. Video settings include thumbnails, optional play buttons, player controls and minimum width. Depending on the source, settings include autoplay, hover playback, looping, mute, and Watch Later or Queue buttons. Provider and browser playback restrictions apply.

A remote video needs a remote featured image for its thumbnail. For a video in the Media Library, choose a frame and save it as the thumbnail. Featured sliders can replace a single featured image with a slider; galleries can combine multiple remote images or videos.

WooCommerce galleries and variations

Pro supports remote product image and video galleries, galleries for individual product variations, and the FIFU product gallery. Store processes also include automatic product category images, image lookup by ASIN, adding product images to order emails, Quick Buy on compatible shop pages, and an option to download supported remote images to the Media Library. Compatible remote product images can use WooCommerce lightbox and zoom.

Automation and integrations

Set featured media from post content, a title-based image search, a web page URL, a custom field or a website screenshot. Product images can be found by ASIN, and supported product category images can be assigned automatically. Pro also supports configured automatic sharing workflows for Facebook, Instagram and X.

Import and export workflows include WP All Import, WP All Export, compatible WooCommerce product CSV imports, and WebToffee product import and export. REST API endpoints support media operations, and WP-CLI can manage featured media settings. Supported fields and operations depend on each integration's configuration.

Integration options include Elementor featured video widgets; Gravity Forms featured video and slider fields; and Dokan product gallery fields. Pro also adds supported image and video workflows for bbPress and BuddyBoss Platform. PHP functions can set featured videos, sliders, product image and video lists, and product category videos.

Cloud delivery and setup

Optional FIFU Cloud is a separate service for managed image delivery. It offers cloud storage, optimized WebP thumbnails, a global edge network, smart cropping, automatic upload and deletion scheduling, and hotlink protection.

Install Featured Image from URL Pro in WordPress, configure its settings, then add a valid image or video URL to supported content, a taxonomy term or a product. Preview the result. If media does not appear, check that its URL is direct and publicly accessible and that the source permits external display. Before removing FIFU, review its metadata cleanup settings; themes or extensions that rely on FIFU to display remote featured images may stop showing them after removal.
