Publish files through WordPress

Embed Any Document PLUS is the paid edition of Embed Any Document for displaying Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and PDF files in WordPress posts and pages. Visitors can read embedded files without an additional browser add-on. Add a file from the WordPress media library or use a supported cloud source.

In Gutenberg, add a document with the Document block. In the classic editor, use Add Document. You can also place an optional download link below an embed.

Match the source and viewer

Supported cloud sources include Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive, and Box. Viewer choices include Google Docs Viewer and Microsoft Office Online, and PDFs can use the browser-native viewer. PLUS includes viewing settings for documents hosted with Google Drive, OneDrive, and Box. Dropbox is supported as a source. The available viewer depends on the file and where it is hosted.

  • Word: DOC, DOCX, DOCM, DOTM, DOTX
  • Excel: XLS, XLSX, XLSB, XLSM
  • PowerPoint: PPT, PPTX, PPSX, PPS, PPTM, POTM, PPAM, POTX, PPSM
  • PDF

Use documents with cloud access controls

Cloud privacy and download controls vary by service. Available options may include password protection, restricted views, removing download access, and embedding larger files. For Box documents, options include setting a password and disabling the download button. These controls are provided by supported cloud services.

Use the plugin to present reports, forms, brochures, manuals, and other office documents on a WordPress site. A publisher can embed a cloud-hosted file and add an optional download link. The viewers are described as mobile-ready and cross-browser compatible.

Viewer limits

Embedded documents rely on third-party viewing services, so files must be available online. The viewers do not support local hosts, intranets, or files in password-protected environments. Google Docs Viewer works with files up to 8 MB, and Microsoft Office Online supports files up to 10 MB. Embedded documents do not play audio or video and do not display document animations or transitions. Default viewer buttons and other capabilities generally cannot be removed or changed.

Add and review a document

  1. Install the Embed Any Document plugin in WordPress.
  2. Open a post or page in Gutenberg or the classic editor.
  3. Use the Document block or Add Document option to choose a file or document source.
  4. Choose an available viewer and set any supported download or privacy options.
  5. Save or publish the page, then review the embedded document.
