Video Thumbnails Reloaded Pro: From Embed to Featured Image

From video embed to featured picture

When you publish a post, Video Thumbnails Reloaded Pro finds the first embedded video and retrieves a thumbnail supplied by its video source. The image can be saved to your media library and set as the post’s featured image automatically, so you do not have to prepare each thumbnail yourself.

Provider thumbnails and aspect ratio

The Pro settings let you select an aspect ratio. This can help when a source thumbnail has black bars or does not fit your website’s presentation. Video Thumbnails uses high-resolution widescreen thumbnails when they are available; non-HD videos may provide fullscreen pictures.

Supported sources and video limits

Supported providers include YouTube, Vimeo, Facebook, Vine, Twitch, Dailymotion, Metacafe, TED, VK, Blip, Google Drive, Funny or Die, CollegeHumor, MPORA, Livestream, Yahoo Screen, Wistia, Youku, Tudou, SAPO, and Rutube, along with other listed providers.

The plugin uses thumbnails supplied by supported video sites. It does not make thumbnails from self-hosted video files or choose an image from a specific point in a video. Providers may offer their own thumbnail selection utilities for videos published from your account.

Custom content and theme support

Video Thumbnails Reloaded Pro works with custom post types and custom fields. If a theme or another plugin stores video information in a custom field instead of the main post content, enter that field name on the Video Thumbnails settings page so the plugin can scan it.

Using thumbnails as featured images depends on your theme supporting post thumbnails. If it does not, the theme may need changes to support Featured Images or the plugin’s custom functions. The plugin can also provide functions for use outside a standard loop.

Publishing process

  1. Embed a video from a supported site in a post.
  2. Publish the post so the plugin can find the first embedded video.
  3. Let the plugin retrieve and save the available thumbnail to your media library.
  4. Use the saved image as the post’s featured image.
  5. Choose an aspect ratio in the Pro settings if the thumbnail needs a various presentation.

Installation and troubleshooting

Install Video Thumbnails Reloaded Pro in WordPress and open its settings page. If your video is stored in a custom field, enter that field’s name there. If a thumbnail is not found, save the post changes, then use the Debugging page to test the video markup and image downloading. You can also try another supported source and review support threads for similar cases.
