Start with new and existing images
Smush can optimize images as they are uploaded. For documents already in the media library, execute a bulk pass or choose images individually, without uploading them again. Directory Smush also reaches image files outside that library, including theme folders, add-on directories, and other server directories.
Choose compression for file size and quality
Lossless and lossy compression let you balance image quality and file size. By default, Smush compresses resized versions and preserves original files. Smush Pro also works with full-size image compression for images up to 256 MB.
Control when and how images load
Lazy loading waits to load images until they are needed, reducing work during the initial load of pages with many images. Smush Pro can also preload images. It converts images to WebP and AVIF, then serves those formats automatically to supported browsers.
Size images for their display area
Dynamic image sizing adjusts an image to fit its container, regardless of its original dimensions. Smush can also add missing width and height attributes. These dimensions help browsers reserve space before an image loads, which can reduce layout shifts.
Deliver images through a global CDN
Smush Pro can serve images through a global image CDN. Delivery is based on user location, and the service lists 119 CDN servers and up to 500 GB of bandwidth. This can reduce latency for users in various regions, particularly on image-heavy sites.
Set up the process
Install Smush Pro, then enable the options that fit your website, such as compression, lazy loading, WebP and AVIF delivery, CDN delivery, and image sizing. Automatic optimization handles new uploads. Use bulk optimization for existing media or Directory Smush for images stored outside the media library.
