Manage media by category
WordPress Media Library Categories Premium includes category management to the Media Library. Add, edit, or remove categories on media items, filter the library by category, and use bulk actions to change categories on multiple items at once.
Filter while inserting media
The Premium edition includes a category filter when inserting media into a post or page. Choose a category to narrow the entries shown while selecting media.
Filter gallery pictures
Use the category attribute with the WordPress [gallery] shortcode. Its value can be a category slug or a term ID:
[gallery category="my-category-slug"][gallery category="14"]
To show attachments uploaded to a particular post and filter them by category, combine id and category, for example [gallery category="my-category-slug" id="123"]. Leave the ID empty to target the current post or page: [gallery category="my-category-slug" id=""]. An incorrect slug falls back to pictures attached to the displayed post or page; an incorrect term ID returns no images. Other gallery behavior follows the built-in shortcode.
Use shared or separate categories
By default, media uses the same categories as posts and pages. To manage media categories separately, set a custom taxonomy under Settings → Media. Taxonomy filter support is listed for WordPress 4.9 through 7.1.
